Pffft....I got up to Orange in my school (which is the third belt) when I was in the adult level, and up to blue (5th belt) in the youth level when I was in. All that was achieved within 3 years.

You must be taking Kung Fu, or something.Usually the Karate belt system is as follows:
Whitebelt w/ stripe Yellowbelt w/ stripe Bluebelt w/ stripe Redbelt w/ stripe Brownbelt w/ 4 stripes Blackbelt w/ 10 stripes

You must be taking Kung Fu, or something. I didn't. It was called "The American Society of Karate". Basically Ed Parker style stuff. Here's how the belt system went for youth: White Yellow Orange Green Blue Purple (3 levels) Red (3 levels) Here's how it was in the adult level: White Yellow Orange Green Blue Purple Brown (3 levels) Black (5 levels, each indicated by a star on the belt) I believe it varies pretty much everywhere you go; if there IS a universal system, then my God strike me down.

Shotokan Karate goes like this: White, yellow, orange, blue, purple, brown, black, black with various colored symbols. There is no green or red in this style, which seems odd. But each sensei at each school uses a different belt system of his or her choosin, so it DOES vary like a mofo! In case ya'll wondering, my style is basic street fighting... a mix of martial arts, boxing, using weapons, and just plain keepin yo ass alive and defending yoself when ya gots to. As for skill level... well, it all depends on who has da better weapon!

I think karate is to much close combat. I trained thaiboxing before, but hurt my wrist so I had to stop. Now I train kenjutsu. There I can at least have my sword between myself and my enemy.

I took 3 different forms of martial art before realizing that none of them were for true self-defense in a combat situation. For that, you have to take a mixture of boxing and wrestling with liberal ammounts of sparring. Taking a kicking art can really backfire as an experienced wrestler can take down a kicker in seconds.
Like Bruce Lee said, you can't limit yourself to one style and then be left clueless in a random situation. A street fighter isn't going to let you get off that flashy roundhouse kick. You have to be fluid and adaptive. The only way to get there is through flexible study and lots of in-the-ring action.

man you really thought this out. You know what i do is i check the guy out and then make stuff up as i go along, add a little bit of insanity in there and i've got the guy cryin for mommy but i've never really fought a guy before in my life and don't plan on either but i did sock my friend one in the head when he was dising me off about my "condition". And it was pretty hard to he even said so himself. I also take some stuff off of some movies i watch and hope to dear god that it works.
Oh and melfiece i bet i know what belt you have i think you told me one time you have a ........ brown belt? I was right wasn't i you can't deny it i was right you can't beat the system, cause i AM the system
