Can someone help me please? I have got about 50 different DOOM editors on my computer but all of them play up whenever I try to build a door. By 'playing up' I mean you usually can't walk through the doors, sometimes the doors won't open and/or close and they always look strange - like when you use the IDCLIP cheat to walk out of the map and into null space. Even when they seem to work they turn the whole room behind them into one giant door too, so you get whole rooms raising up and down. I hope this is just some really silly error that is simple to fix because I have not exactly got much experience building DOOM levels. Does anyone have any advice? If you're going to talk about Linedefs and all that technical bollocks please provide an English translation!

are you new to doom editing? first go to doomworld and download doomcad6.1 thats the simplest editor to work with. then select the prefabe door thats already made for you and connect the sectors.

By 'playing up' I mean you usually can't walk through the doors, sometimes the doors won't open and/or close and they always look strange - like when you use the IDCLIP cheat to walk out of the map and into null space. if they don't open...be sure you set the type to Door open/close..and there are two different types. One that opens and 5 sec later closes, and theres one that opens and never closes... I don't understand what you mean by "look strange" when not clipping and going into out of the map...if you are refering to the HOM effect...then thats it. Even when they seem to work they turn the whole room behind them into one giant door too, so you get whole rooms raising up and down three things that could of happened.... 1: when you gave the door a linedef tag, you must of accenentally tagged the room behind with the same tag number as well.. 2: you got unclosed sectors.... some of the behind room's linedefs (walls) are connected with the door, and they are moving when the door is moving... 3: you probably didn't split the sectors right... what I mean by that is you didn't gave the hallway a little sector of its own to act as the door... now its tough to explain it but if you want, you can send me your map, and while I fix it, I'll note down what I did. also, go to www.sbsoftware.com and get Deepsea, although its a sharewere, you can still use it for basic purposes...(but if you are going to dedicate your life to doom mapping like me ;D , then buy it.) Deepsea has a built in tutorial on how to make doors. and it even show a little graphic clip of making a door.

If you're going to talk about Linedefs and all that technical bollocks please provide an English translation! let me explain this.... LINEDEF: a linedef is what blocks you, acts like a wall, used as a trigger to activate a door or switch, used to teleport etc. they are mainly used as walls... NOTE: If you notice, you can see a little line in the middle of the linedefs, when making a room, BE SURE YOU HAVE THEM POINTING INWARD TO MAKE A SUCCESSFUL ROOM. SECTOR: when you got 3 or more linedefs all connected together, you got a sector, (err...room) if you do the same thing INSIDE a room, you'll get another sector, BUT you can use it as a pedistal, Door, or lift...

If you're new to editing, get WadAuthor. You can right click on the sector and choose "Make sector into door", and it does it for you.
It's still good to learn how to do it on your own, though.
